It isn’t always practical (or realistic) to take out the time to reapply. We’ve got a few tricks up our sleeve on ways you can make your makeup last.

Skincare, First

First thing’s first, before you apply any makeup make sure you are starting, with freshly exfoliated skin. Clean skin and a good scrub will brush off all those dead, dry skin cells off your face which so often leads to dryness and cracking. Not sure which products to try? Check out our list on the best at-home exfoliators.

Ditch the Foundation

Before you close your laptop and scream in horror at this idea, consider this: no matter what you do, foundation can often end up looking cakey throughout the day. Let’s accept that and instead, apply concealer or a dab of long-wearing foundation on only the spots you need it. Cover under eye circles, around the nose, lip area or anywhere else you may have discoloration or blemishes to hide. Finish with an all-over powder for a smooth finish and rejoice in the fact that you won’t have to worry about looking like a cakey mess by the end of the night.

Embrace Primer

Go ahead and commit this to memory now: primer is your best friend! A great skin primer will smooth out the skin and make for a clear canvas on which you’ll be applying your makeup. It will also help your makeup last longer and glide on for a flawless finish. Some of our favorite primers to try include Too Faced Primed and Poreless Skin Smoothing Face Primer and Smashbox Photo Finish Foundation Primer.

And speaking of primer, don’t forget about eyeshadow primer, too! If you aren’t familiar with the product, it really works well as a base for your eyeshadow color to help prevent fading. If you have greasy lids that sometimes causes your eyeliner to run, eyeshadow primer also helps with that, too. Urban Decay Eye Shadow Primer Potion Tube is a great product to try. If you don’t have any on hand, a quick dot of some creamy concealer on the lids works well, too.

Attend to Lashes

It isn’t exactly comfortable to be wearing falsies all day, so getting natural, long lasting lashes is a huge want! And for that, we’ve got a few great tips: First when you curl your lashes, be sure you’re heating up your eyelash curler. Just like a hot curling iron makes for long-wearing effects in your locks, the same goes for your eyelashes, too! To heat up your curling iron, simply hold it under the blow dryer for a minute or so. Next, dust a bit of translucent face powder over your lashes. Since the powder will slightly cling to the lashes, it’ll help them look longer and more lush once mascara is applied. Go ahead and do a few coats of your favorite mascara to ensure it lasts all night long. Maybelline Volum’ Express the Colossal is one of our favorites.

Prep Lips

Just like with your face and eyelids, prepping your lips before applying color is the key to making it last longer. A bit of foundation applied before your lipstick will do the trick and help keep your lip color from going astray. A great lip liner will also help hold color in place; just be sure to use a neutral lip color instead of a deep red so you don’t end up with the dreaded ring around the lips if your lipstick fades.

Suddenly your hair is a mess, your makeup is dripping off your face and you’re just all wet and feel gross. How do you adjust your skincare and makeup routine to ward off looking like you are melting when a bad storm hits? Springtime is prime time for crazy weather changes and you want to be prepared to look gorgeous at all times. Try some of the tips to stay one step ahead of Mother Nature. You’ll thank us next time you get stuck in a thunderstorm.

Since your skin will feel and look dewier on rainy days, just go with it. Slick on a tinted moisturizer and tinted lip balm for a dewy and radiant glow. Even if you skin gets a little wet, your face will still look natural.

Most of us feel gloomy when the weather is gloomy, so brighten up your makeup on those days for a better mood. Sky blue or bright green will brighten your eyes and contrast against gray skies. Try a bright pink blush for a pretty flush or fuchsia lipstick for another pop of color. Just remember to only use bright colors on one area of your face. For example, if you use a bright lip color, keep your eyes and cheeks more neutral.

Go for waterproof makeup. When you notice the weather is wet, make sure to use waterproof mascara and eyeliner to avoid runny makeup. A primer before you apply eye shadow can also help your eyeliner and eye shadows stay put all day long. You may also want to check out waterproof foundations like Makeup Forever Extreme Camouflage Cream. Try a cream blush stick like Miracle Skin Transformer’s Tinted Sculpting Balm to keep your makeup sitting pretty all day long even if you get stuck outside in a storm.

Bring along a mattifying powder like Urban Decays’ De-slick . If you do not keep a powder in your purse for touch-ups, make sure to pack it when the weather acts up. This way you can fix your makeup when you come inside from the rain and help control oil and dewy skin if that isn’t your thing.

If you do get stuck in a downpour, remember to dry off as soon as possible. Wet skin can lead to fungal infections and no one wants that!

What tricks do you use for your makeup and skincare routine when the weather is crappy outside?

As the frame to your face, your eyebrows bring balance and symmetry to your features. But years of tweezing and waxing along with a natural decrease in hair growth as you age can cause sparseness or bald spots in your eyebrows over time. In some cases, conditions like alopecia areata, burns, infections, thyroid disease and other genetic issues can contribute to sudden and sometimes complete loss of brows.

Common solutions include powders and pencils, which are short-term fixes and require tedious daily application. Cosmetic tattoos that promise a permanent solution can look unnatural, if not immediately, inevitably as gravity takes its toll. Eyebrow transplants provide a realistic, lasting solution that can be achieved with a two- to three-hour surgical procedure that costs between $6,000 and $8,000.

Procedure Particulars

While you are sedated under two types of anesthesia, doctors remove transplant hairs from your arms, head, legs, or nape of the neck and divide it as necessary into single strands using a stereo-microscope.

A 0.5 millimeter blade is used to puncture the skin to create recipient sites about 3 millimeters deep for the transplants. Between 50 and 350 hairs are individually placed along the surface of each brow, depending on how much hair you have.

The angle at which the recipient sites are placed will determine the direction of hair growth, so precision is necessary to achieve a flawless finish that closely follows the direction of existing hair growth and the brow’s natural curve.

Post-Operative Care

After undergoing eyebrow hair restoration, transplanted hair will continue to grow. Of course, you’ll want to stick to trimming instead of tweezing to maintain your ideal shape. While healing, the recipient sites can contract, causing a more elevated appearance than desired.

Since transplanted hair used comes from other areas of the body, appearance and growth rate will vary, but begin to resemble your existing eyebrow hair over time. In some patients, it may never identically match, but restoration is generally undetectable with transplanted strands blending seamlessly together with the existing brow. In a year’s time, the results of your procedure will have matured and in some cases, an additional transplant is elected to achieve a fuller appearance.

Transplant Alternatives

If it’s cost prohibitive or you’re afraid to go under the knife but want a long-term fix, a trip to your pharmacy may be the best solution. Some dermatologists recommend using women’s Rogaine hair loss medication to successfully stimulate eyebrow hair growth. Like the plastic surgeon requires meticulousness, you’ll need to use the utmost caution when applying this product. An accidental dribble in the wrong area and you may end up with unwanted hair growth there.

Those long hot days of summer call out for a casual makeup routine, but what do you do if you’ve planned a hot night out? You certainly don’t want to hit the town with the beachy-natural look you rocked throughout the day.

Summer nights require a spicier look – something fun and sultry at the same time. You want your makeup to reflect the lively feel and steamy sex appeal of the season – at least that’s my goal. After a day of fun in the sun it’s great to clean up and glam it up a bit. Here are some tips for upping the ante on your sexy summer look.

- Liquid eyeliner oozes drama, but a face full of dramatic makeup doesn’t really scream summer. Try one in a color other than black and keep the rest of your look subtle, especially if you plan to draw a heavy line. Try Urban Decay 24/7 Waterproof Liquid Eyeliner in Radium, Retrograde or Siren for a vibrant pop of color

- Switching to a peachy blush is a great way to add some alluring color to your cheeks. The hue has a warm weather feel and looks great with a neutral lip color. Maybelline Dream Bouncy Blush in Peach Satin gives a natural looking warm glow that you can build for more color.

- If you want to play up your lips for the evening, try a brighter color than your usual. Go with a formula that is dewy and has some shine. Let your lips do the talking and go pretty basic on the rest of your look. Try Make Up For Ever Rouge Artist Natural in Iridescent Icy Coral or Buxom Big & Healthy Lip Polish in Debbie.

- For those who love a neutral face, summer offers the perfect opportunity to put some sizzle into your regular look. Neutral doesn’t have to mean bland. Spice up your face with some luminous bronzer and wear a glossy honey shade on your lips. Cargo HydraBronze smooths and illuminates and MAC Sheen Supreme Lipglass in Jasmine Honey creates an ultra shiny, moisturized pout.

So when you’re getting ready for your next steamy night out, give one or two of these ideas a try. For summer nights, I think it works best to echo colors of the sunset, sand and water. Just remember not to put the whole sunset on your face at once. As with other looks, it’s best to go for drama on one feature and keep the rest low key.

I don’t know about you, but when I’m sweating it out, the last thing I want to feel is like my makeup is dripping down my face. I live in Arizona so the summers here are long and intense which means switching up my typical beauty routine. Here are some summer tips for you inherent planners out there!

One of the first things I like to lighten up on is foundation. Although I don’t use it often in general, I definitely look for something much lighter (and with sweat-staying-power) to get me through those 100+ degree days. Thankfully, I can swap out my foundation for one of the great tinted moisturizers on the market that do the trick, most of which double as a sunblock, too! Here are some of the top three tinted moisturizers to try.

Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer

Whenever possible, I try to pick up a moisturizer that doubles as a sunblock, and Laura Mercier’s Tinted Moisturizer delivers exactly that. Although it’s a bit on the steep side price wise, it’s a great lightweight formula that packs a hint of color for lightweight coverage and offers SPF 20 protection. There are 10 different shades available so it’s easy to find one that fits your skin tone. Plus, it’s won a slew of beauty awards in the industry including being named In Style magazine’s “Best Beauty Buy” and “Best of Beauty” for Allure.

Olay Total Effects 7-in-1 Tone Correcting UV Moisturizer

For a drugstore beauty buy, Olay Total Effects 7-in-1 Tone Correcting UV Moisturizer gives you a lot of bang for your buck. It’s a moisturizer, it’s a sunblock, it’s tinted and it fights aging. What else could you want out of a beauty product? The formula is touted to fight the seven signs of aging and to even out skin tone. It also has SPF 15 sunscreen and provide fresh, luminous coverage.

Neutrogena Healthy Skin Enhancer

With the summer months here, it’s great to find a product that gives you foundation-like coverage in a lighter version. That’s exactly what you’ll get with the Neutrogena Healthy Skin Enhancer, an oil-free formula that comes in six different shades. The moisturizer offers SPF 20 protection and also works as a retinol treatment. Its budget price tag and drugstore availability doesn’t hurt its appeal either.

Do you ditch foundation for the summer? What are your favorite tinted moisturizers or lightweight formulas?

Oily Skin?

If your skin looks slick by mid-afternoon, you’ll definitely need a foundation that will keep your oil under control. For skin that tends to produce a lot of oil, you will definitely need a powder. Don’t shy away from moisturizer though. Your skin still needs it to remain healthy, just be sure to choose an oil free moisturizer so it doesn’t cause more oil.

If you want a little more coverage than a powder, try a matte look makeup. Some great options are Maybelline Dream Matte Mouse foundation, NYX Stay Matte not Flat Liquid Makeup, or Bare Minerals Matte Foundation.

For long-lasting oil control, try Urban Decay’s De-Slick Makeup Setting Spray to help control oil and set your makeup if you have a long day.

Combination Skin?

Your skin might be oily AND dry at the same time. This means you have combination skin and will need to use different products to make your skin clear and beautiful. Make sure you moisturize the dry spots with a tinted moisturizer and use oil-free powder for the parts that tend to get oily.

Dry Skin?

Is your skin extra dry and flaky? Especially in the winter? You definitely need a tinted moisturizer or BB Cream to keep your skin hydrated, healthy and smooth all day long. If you don’t find a tinted moisturizer that you love, you can make your own! Grab your favorite moisturizer and mix in a few drops of your favorite liquid foundation and you will have your very own creation of the perfect tinted moisturizer.

Try a BB (Beauty Balm) Cream for even more benefits: it minimizes pores, moisturizes and hydrates beautifully, keeps your skin protected from the sun, and has a primer so your makeup stays put all day. Some great options are from Urban Decay, Too Faced and Tarte.

Aging Skin?

If you’re looking for more of an anti-aging foundation to control wrinkles and fine lines, check out the new CC (Cover Control) Creams. Much like a BB Cream with lots of benefits, CC Creams fight lines and wrinkles, reduce the appearance of redness or discoloration, gently exfoliate and of course, moisturize.

Hydroxatone and Juice Beauty have great CC Cream brands.

What skin type are you? What type of foundation is your favorite for your skin type? Have you tried a BB or CC Cream?

If you’re getting married, chances are you keep hearing about the need to try out airbrush makeup. The form of foundation application has become extremely popular in the last few years for providing flawless coverage and long-lasting wear. If you’re thinking of trying out airbrush makeup for your wedding or even buying one of the at-home systems, check out some of the pros and cons below before committing.

Pros

It almost goes without saying that one of the biggest pros to airbrush makeup is its long-wearing effect–we’re talking 14 to 18 hours and up! Unlike traditional foundation, you won’t need to retouch after a few hours. Airbrush makeup can withstand extreme conditions, meaning it won’t melt if it’s hot and you’re sweating and it won’t rub off on your new hubby’s tuxedo or transfer onto your clothing.

Airbrush makeup provides flawless coverage, too. Think: that silky-smooth complexion you see on models in magazines. Although many brides are worried that airbrush makeup may end up looking “cakey” or heavy, it’s actually quite easy to control the level of coverage. Since the foundation itself is just a diluted pigment that’s dropped into a spray gun, the foundation is easy to evenly distribute onto the skin. The tiny foundation particles create a flawless finish without streaks or brush stroke lines.

Like with any makeup application, before a special event, get a facial or exfoliate before for best results. If you’re breaking out due to pre-wedding stress and jitters, airbrush makeup is also great at hiding imperfections.

Cons

The two biggest cons about airbrush makeup is how it reacts when wet and, the price tag. Airbrush makeup usually tacks on an extra $30 to $60 for bridal makeup fees, but for many it’s a worthwhile investment. There are also some at-home DIY airbrush makeup kits you may want to consider trying, like the Temptu Airbrush Makeup System. Before taking the plunge, have a makeup professional apply airbrush foundation during your bridal makeup trial to see for yourself if you like the results.

The second biggest con to airbrush makeup is that it will streak if wet. Heavy amounts of crying, for example, could leave behind streaks that aren’t easy to touch up with regular foundation. For the most part, this isn’t a huge concern for many unless you are planning on swimming during your nuptials, but it is something that some may want to take into consideration.

Have you tried airbrush makeup before? What did you think of the results?

When going out for a special occasion, us girls love our waterproof mascara and eyeliner! Who wants runaway makeup when you’re supposed to be having fun all night long? An unexpected dip in the pool? Boyfriend drama that leaves you sobbing? No worries, thanks to waterproof makeup!

But what happens at the end of the night? The stubborn colors that you loved hours earlier now won’t budge. So you scrub and scrub and scrub, leaving your skin irritated and red. Not a cute look! So how do you remove waterproof makeup gently and easily?

Try a natural cure: olive oil. Olive oil breaks down the waterproof properties in your makeup so you can clean it all off with a few swipes. Apply a drop to your fingers and rub your eyes and lashes until it starts coming off in your fingers.

Baby oil is another great oil that is cheap, easy to use and only requires a dab. Make sure your eyes are closed while you use oils so you don’t irritate your eyeballs. Another great and cheap alternative is petroleum jelly. Apply some petroleum jelly to your eyes and let sit. Then wash off with a warm, wet washcloth. Ta-da!

Try something you probably already have in you fridge: dairy milk or almond milk. This one might require some scrubbing but it is very gentle when you apply with a cotton ball in a circular motion.Another classic treatment is cold cream. Pond’s has a great version! This will work on your entire face, great if you like using all types of different waterproof makeup. Wash your face first, apply a thick coat of cold cream and let soak in for a few minutes. Lastly, wipe clean with a warm, wet washcloth for moisturized and super clean skin!

Of course, there are always many different brands of waterproof makeup remover! They come in wipes (my favorite type because of the ease of use), liquids you can use with tissues or cotton balls and makeup remover pads. Neutrogena and Maybelline have many different types that all work great and are fairly inexpensive! Check out your local retailer for all of the different types but be reminded that these could contain chemicals, so if you’re looking for a natural cure, try olive oil or milk.

(LINK)
