The summer makeup tips you can’t live without
July 27, 2012
Ah, summer – months filled with long days at the beach, humid nights on the deck and weekend getaways. We all love the fun activities throughout summer, but it can be tricky to make sure our makeup is up to the challenges and excitement we face on each one of these dog days of summer.
Between sweating and humidity, some makeup is bound to smudge or melt, and with all the fun plans you probably have, it can be tricky to find time to touch it up. You might also be wary of trying cute summer makeup trends if you fear they will only streak down your face. Consider this your makeup handbook for this season – it’s gonna be a hot one (in more ways than one!)
Hitting the beach and looking good doing it
Wearing makeup to the beach may seem counter-intuitive, but there’s nothing wrong with glamming up just a bit as you play in the surf and sand. It’s still important to keep your makeup looking as natural as possible, so stick to a tinted moisturizer or BB cream (with SPF of course!) and sweep on some bronzer and blush. If you’re going to wear eye makeup, keep eyeshadow shades in the peachy-gold range. Also, now is a good time to pull out the waterproof mascara.
Melt-proofing your makeup
Aside from giving you heat rash, making you woozy and causing you to sweat bullets, that brutal summer heat and humidity is bound to make your makeup melt, causing it to smear or run down your face. Not cute. Also, that “shine-proof” powder and foundation doesn’t stand a chance when you’re sweating through the summer heat.
One of the best ways to make sure everything stays put is by starting with a primer. The few seconds it takes to smooth this product on over your moisturizer and under your foundation will totally be worth it at the end of the day, when everything is still perfectly intact.
You won’t need to worry much about melting foundation if you’re not wearing any. Just as you swap out heavy sweaters and pants for breezy dresses when the temperature rises, consider swapping out your thick foundation with a light powder, instead. Bonus: it’s super easy to reapply when you’re on the go, and it can soak up sweaty spots and shine.
How to be trendy – on summer time
The warm weather just beckons us to wear bright colors, and makeup is no exception. But how do you try out summer trends when you’re rushing from work to cocktail hour, or from the beach to a party?
If you have 15 minutes, line your eyes with a deep plum eyeliner pencil, winging out the ends for a sassy cat eye, and swipe a bright color on your nails. Or, use a pencil in a shade of turquoise or green to add a pop of color to your upper or lower eyelid.
You can get an all-over bronzed goddess look in less than five minutes. Swipe some pretty, shimmer shades of peach, gold and bronze eyeshadow on your lids, and bronzer on your cheeks. Bronzer is really a staple of summer makeup – it makes your skin look brighter and your teeth look whiter!
If you only have a minute to change up your look, lipstick in a bright shade of coral or tangerine is your best bet. You’ll look super trendy (and put-together) in just seconds!
